Metal Roofs Will Be On The Rise In The New Year |
This isn’t over the head of architects and building owners. Metal roofs are the obvious choice for providing unique designs, durability, energy savings, and affordability.

NEW LIFE FOR OLD BUILDINGS |
Of course new buildings can be constructed with metal roofs. But older buildings can also be retrofit with new metal roofs. Retrofitting with metal roofs brings new life to old buildings. Plus there are many advantages of installing metal roofs over old roofing material rather than removing the old roof. First, it avoids having to deposit the old roofing material into a landfill, reducing the 10 million tons of old roofing shingles placed in U.S. landfills each year. Retrofitting also has other benefits, including fixing maintenance issues, updating appearance, and providing energy savings.

KEEP IT ON THE DOWN LOW |
It’s no secret. Low Slope Metal Roofs are recognized by building owners and architects alike for long service life, low life cycle cost, sustainability, recyclability, low maintenance requirements, lightweight, and resistance to wind. As a result, Low Slope Metal Roof manufacturers often offer 20- to 40-year warranties on their products. Long life and low maintenance requirements also put Low Slope Metal Roofs on an attractive life cycle cost track. This was confirmed in a 2005 study of Low Slope Roofing conducted by Ducker International. Respondents to the study said they expected the life cycle cost of a metal roof, including outlays for maintenance, to be about 30 cents a square foot per year, far less than built-up and single-ply roofs, at 37 cents and 57 cents, respectively.

BUT THE COSTS AREN’T STEEP |
Specifiers appreciate Steep Slope Metal Roofs for their reasonable cost, aesthetic appeal, long service life, low maintenance, lightweight, and resistance to wind. Plus beautiful coatings can provide the look of wood, shingles, copper patinas, and more…without the hassles of other materials. Plus Steep Slope Metal Roofs can be formed into a wide variety of shapes, providing infinite design possibilities. Because Steep Slope Metal Roofs accelerate the rate of water run-off, they also reduce the likelihood of a build-up of debris, mold and mildew. Thus Steep Slope Metal Roofs are less likely to experience staining from acid rain or UV degradation than non-metal roofs. The durability and reliability of Steep Slope Metal Roofs have led manufacturers to typically warranty their products for 20 to 40 years.

ROOFING AFTERLIFE? |
This recently renovated 120-year-old zinc roof on St. Catherine’s Church in Reutlingen, Germany called for dismantling and removing all the zinc tiles from the roof in order to inspect, clean, and salvage as many as possible. Tiles that were too damaged for reuse were recycled, but most were reusable. The remaining roof was re-clad with RHEINZINK. The Gothic Revival-style church is now preserved to its original state, circa 1890. The crew can put away their ladders now: the renovated zinc roof is expected to last 80–100 years!
